Fly Fishing for Rainbows:

When fishing for Early Season Rainbows in Alaska, we find it best to focus on larger streamer patterns with weighted bodies tied on a #2 to #6 streamer hooks. Nymphs like Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, Scuds, and stonefly nymphs also produce well early in the waters of Alaska.

Then as the season progresses and the returning salmon are depositing their eggs on the stream beds try some egg patterns that represent the salmon spawn in the water. These egg patterns are often fished using a floating line with a strike indicator.

Now, to our dismay, we need to look at the end of the season or late fall rainbow fishing. There is an abundance of dead and decaying salmon in the lakes, rivers and streams that trout are feasting upon. Use this to your advantage by switching to some fleshy patterns with trailing strips in ginger, white, pink, orange, cream that mimic the colors of the decaying salmon.
